GIS and Data Resources: Get Started with ArcGIS

What is ArcGIS?

ArcGIS, developed by Esri, is a geographic information system (GIS) used to create, manage, share, and analyze spatial data.

ArcGIS Online is a web-based tool that allows users to import data, create and manage content, and share content with other groups and users. Use the UHCL ArcGIS Online portal to create maps and content; when you are ready to save, log in with your UHCL credentials.

ArcGIS Pro is part of the ArcGIS Desktop suite and allows users to publish and manage data and maps in conjunction with ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise. ArcGIS Pro software is available on campus and for download to your personal computer.

ArcGIS Software on Campus

Esri ArcGIS software is available:

  • on specialty computers in academic computing labs*, and
  • for download to your personal computer.

*Please verify open lab hours before visiting campus, and visit the COVID-19 Resources page for important updates. For instructions on how to connect to lab computers via remote desktop, click here.
