Access GIS Software

There are many GIS software options. You can begin with either ArcGIS (the proprietary industry standard) or free and open-source software (QGIS is a popular choice). Each package has its merits and drawbacks. Most GIS data formats are cross platform and will work in any package.

UHCL students, staff, and faculty have access to the ESRI ArcGIS software suite for academic and non-commercial purposes.

  • For information on accessing ArcGIS Online, see the “ArcGIS Online” section.

  • For information on downloading ArcGIS Pro, see the “Installing and Licensing ArcGIS Pro” section.

  • For information on accessing GIS software remotely, see the “Accessing GIS Pro Remotely” section.
