Dr. Michael M. Lee became the Dean of Library and Learning Resources for UHCL on September 1, 1987, making him the second library director for the university. Lee was the first Asian American library director in the university’s history, having come from Canton, China. Before coming to UHCL, Dr. Lee was the Director of Library and Professor of Library and Information Sciences at Central Missouri State University from 1982 to 1987.

During his tenure at UHCL, Dr. Lee led Neumann Library to becoming a Texas state depository in May 1988, making it the first one in the Galveston-Brazoria-Harris Counties area. With his support, the Library founded the new UHCL Archives in 1989, with the department going operational by 1990. Dr. Lee left Neumann Library in 1992.
Dr. Lee worked in a variety of library-related positions at Chicago State University for twelve years while simultaneously completing his PhD. He previously served as Director of Library and Learning Resources and Professor of Education at Saginaw Valley State College in Michigan (1979-1982). Lee received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the National Taiwan University; his MA in Library Science from Western Michigan University; and his PhD from Loyola University Chicago.
