Lost/Unreturned Library Items
- If an item is not returned within 30 days after its due date, it will be billed to your account. Billed items will result in a suspension of borrowing privileges and a block on UHCL student or employee records.
- If you return an item after it has been billed, it will clear your account of all replacement costs for the item. Any applicable overdue fines will remain.
- The charge for lost UHCL items is the price of the item plus a $10.00 processing fee. Payment for lost items must be by cash or check.
- Replacement costs for items from other UH campuses are determined by their home campus. Check the University of Houston or University of Houston Downtown library policies for additional information. Payment for lost items from other UH campuses must be made at the campus that owns the item, even if the book was checked out at UHCL.
- If you pay for a lost/billed UHCL item, and then locate it, you may still return it to the library up to one year after payment date. The cost of the item will be refunded, but not the $10.00 processing fee. Policies differ for books owned by other libraries.
Recalls
What is a recall?
A recall may occur if there are holds on an item that has been checked out for an extended period of time.
Recalled items cannot be renewed and accrue fines of $1.00 per day after their due date.
Most items are subject to recall after six weeks. DVDs, audiobooks, and juvenile items are subject to recall after three weeks. These are only guidelines; there may be exceptions.
If an item you have borrowed is recalled, you will receive an email notification.
- If the item has no renewals, the due date stays the same and fines will not accrue until that date.
- If the item has been renewed one or more times, the due date for the item may change. The email you receive will notify you of the new due date.
