Veterans Day honors all American veterans, both living and dead. Veterans Day is intended to thank living veterans for dedicated and loyal service to their country. Why is Veterans Day on November 11th? Novemeber 11th originally celebrated the anniversary of the official end of World War I in 1918. On the 11th day of the 11th hour of the 11th month of 1918, World War I officially ended. November 11th became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938.
