Classification numbers used for children's fiction may not be unique.

Fic Wil 2005 for example is used for:

  • Each Little Bird That Sings by Deborah Wiles
  • Broken China by Lori Williams
  • Brothers in Hope by Mary Williams
  • The Illustrated Mum by Jacqueline Wilson

Write down or remember the author's name. When you get to the right shelves (Juvenile Fic Wil in this example), books are filed alphabetically by author, then subfiled by title. The date is ignored.

If there is no author, the first 3 letters of the title will be used in the classification instead. This arrangement is common in public libraries and K-12 schools.

Award-Related Shortcuts

There will be some false matches; check detailed records to verify that award or honor or medal appears in an Awards note.

For realistic fiction, search for a known title in OneSearch. If you don't have a specific book in mind:

  • identify books of interest in Database of Award-Winning Children's Literature, which has a limiter for realistic fiction
  • then search for those titles in OneSearch
