Resources and tips to help researchers effectively and ethically use AI tools

Citing AI

You must always check with your professor to see if AI is allowed for your assignments. If you decide to use AI for coursework assignments, then you must adhere to the guidelines of citing AI. Citation rules include sharing that you used AI and citing accordingly. Rules for citing AI are newly formed and will most likely see changes in the future, which means you will have to stay up to date on using this resource.

It is important to remember why you cite resources.

  • To give credit to someone else's work
  • To participate in the rules of scholarly works
  • To establish credibility in your work
  • To adhere to the UHCL Academic Honesty Policy

Examples of citations for AI can be found on the publication citation style webpages.

Most citations styles are in agreement that clearly stating how the tool was used in your assignment is best practice. Where you place that in your assignment will depend on what style you are using. Consider the following areas:

  • Methods section
  • Introduction
  • Full text of AI responses in an appendix
  • Notes, including if you have edited anything

There are some publication styles that do not have established guidelines just yet. In those instances, you should adhere to the guidelines of academic honesty in sharing the tools you used in order to create your assignment. Most guidelines indicate that you should treat AI as a personal communication.

Visit our Citing and Writing Help Research Guide for resources on citation styles not listed above.
