Database Access: Settings for Mac & iPad


Enable Java and Javascript:

   You need to have the latest Java software installed.

    • Mac OS X 10.6 and below: Apple's Java comes pre-installed with your Mac OS.
    • Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) and above: Java is not pre-installed with Mac OS X versions 10.7 and above. To get the latest Java 7 from Oracle, you will need Mac OS X 10.7.3 and above.
    • If you have Java 7, you will see a Java icon under System Preferences. Java versions 6 and below are listed in the Java located in the Applications > Utilities folder on your Mac.

When you have Java, check browser settings.


  1. From the Safari menu, select Preferences
  2. In the top pane, select Security
  3. Next to Web Content, make sure Enable Java and Enable Javascript are checked
  4. Uncheck Block pop-up windows
  5. In the top pane, select Privacy
  6. Next to Block Cookies, select either Never or From third parties and advertisers
  7. Close the pop-up window.


  1. From the Firefox menu, select Preferences
  2. Click Content Tab
  3. Make sure Enable Javascript is checked
  4. Uncheck Block pop-up windows
  5. In the left-hand pane, click Privacy
  6. Make sure Accept cookies from sites is selected
  7. Close the pop-up window

 Chrome (all settings):

  1. Click the Customize icon on the top right of the window and then click Settings
  2. Click the Show advanced settings link at the bottom of the window
  3. Click the Content settings button
  4. Under JavaScript, make sure that Allow all sites to run JavaScript is checked
  5. Under Cookies, make sure that Allow local data to be set is checked
  6. Under Pop-ups, make sure that Allow all sites to show pop-ups is checked
  7. Click Done

Search your hard drive for any software with "pop-up" in the name. Disable it. Examples of popular pop-up blocking applications include:

  • Pop-Up Zapper
  • Popup Eliminator

Pop-up blocking functions are included in some anti-virus, internet security, personal firewall, toolbar, and browser programs. Disable the relevant setting in the program.

These browsers tend to have fewer problems than Safari.


The iPad does not use Java.

Browser settings:


  1. Tap the iPad Settings icon
  2. Scroll down and tap Safari
  3. turn Block Pop-ups off
  4. Set Block Cookies to always allow
  5. Tap Advanced
  6. Turn JavaScript on
  7. Close Settings


  1. Open Chrome
  2. Tap dots icon at top right
  3. Tap Settings
  4. Under Advanced, tap Content Settings
  5. Turn Block Pop-ups off
  6. Turn Accept Cookies on
  7. Tap Done


  1. Open Puffin
  2. Tap dots icon at top right
  3. Tap Settings
  4. Move Block Pop-ups slider to the left so it is not green
  5. Tap anywhere on the screen outside of the Settings menu to close it
