The Foundation for Critical Thinking (FCT) Model

The FCT model being used as part of the UHCL Quality Enhancement Plan is based on the work of Dr. Richard Paul and Dr. Linda Elder. At its simplest, it defines critical thinking as "...the art of analyzing and evaluating thinking with a view to improving it" (The Miniature Guide to Critical Thinking: Concepts and Tools, 6th ed., Dillon Beach, CA: Foundation for Critical Thinking, 2009, p.2). Elements of Reasoning and Intellectual Standards
Introduces elements of reasoning or thought (purpose, question at issue, information, interpretation and influence, concepts, assumptions, implications and consequences) and intellectual standards (clarity, accuracy, precision, relevance, depth, breadth, logic, significance, fairness, and more).
